Wycombe Wanderers have clinched a berth in the Championship after defeating Oxford United by 2-1 in the League One Playoff Final. This is the greatest success in Wycombe’s history and a marvelous one as they were an amateur club only 35 years ago. Now they finally have the chance to compete amongst the big boys.
The Chairboys were off on a flying start after taking the lead in the 9th minute of the game after an Anthony Stewart goal. Oxford managed to rally back in the second and equalized in the 57th minute after a marvelous effort by Mark Sykes. But a steady Jacobson penalty in the 79th minute clinched the final score and marked the beginning of celebrations for Wycombe.
Wycombe Wanderers were formed in 1887 and it took them around a hundred years to reach one of the top flights of English football. Before that, they were competing as amateurs. After reaching League Two in 1994, they bounced back and forth between League One and League Two.
This marks the greatest success for the Buckinghamshire-based club after reaching the FA Cup semi-finale in 2001 and League Cup semi-finals in 2007.
