After nearly contesting for a title, Lazio finishes their season with a 3-1 away loss against Napoli. The Biancocelesti were not able to keep their form before the break and finish the season in fourth place with a Champions League spot as a consolidation prize.
Napoli took the lead after a long-range Fabian Ruiz effort that got deflected along the way and needed up behind the back of the helpless Thomas Strakosha. But Ciro Immobile drew things level after a Marusic’s pass for his 36th goal of the campaign, further cementing his spot as the Serie A top scorer.
But that was all that Lazio had to offer as Insigne turned a penalty committed on Dries Mertens into a 2-1 lead for Napoli. Matteo Politano sealed the deal for Napoli in injury time and definitely sent the game out of Lazio’s reach.
Napoli will finish 7th this season but they qualify for Europa League next seasons after winning Coppa Italia. Lazio is fourth and will compete in the Champions League. With his 36th goal of the season Immobile ties the Serie A all-time record with most goals in a season set by Gonzalo Higuain back in 2016. He will also win the Golden Boot for being Europe’s top scorer.
