Liverpool defeated Arsenal. For the first couple of minutes of the game, it seemed that the Gunners might be able to replicate the near-miracle of July. We say near-miracle because Arsenal’s win at the time was their first in their last 10 Premier League games against the Reds. However, it was not meant to be.
Things did not start well for Liverpool. Sadio Mané got a yellow card 3 minutes in. Lacazette scored the first goal of the game in the 25th minute. It was, quite literally, a gift from the opposing player, Andrew Robertson. Unfortunately for the Gunners, this is pretty much the end of their chances of winning.
Mané got back in the game and shook the Arsenal’s net three minutes later. It was a simple and tempered tap. Liverpool’s mistake allowed Arsenal to score the first goal, but the Reds were back for revenge. Robertson made up for his blunder from before and scored. The halftime ended with 2-1 for the Reds.
The second half did not stop Liverpool from acquiring another yellow card. Arsenal also got two of their own. Diogo Jota finished the game with a score of 3-1 for the Reds. The former Wolves forward enjoyed his debut for Liverpool in the Premier League. He also became the 13th player to score during such a debut.
If there is any blemish on the third victory of the champions defending the title, it may lie in the first twenty-five minutes of the game. The champs as Liverpool should not have allowed so many holes in their defense. That being said, we were able to see once more how they obtained their title in the last season. The Reds are now three for three and there will, likely, be no stopping them for a while.
