Seria A’s Associazione Calcio Milan, known as AC Milan, have always been a top-tier club. After winning the Serie A in 2010, they ever so slowly started to decline into bad form. In 2011 they finished second, then third in 2012. After that, they were out of the top five constantly, falling even into 10th place in 2014.
However, ever since Stefano Pioli took over in 2019, they are getting back to their former glory. In 2020, they finished second, and in 2021, they finally took the Scudetto home. Are they finally back to the team they once were? Find out in this review of Milan’s current events.
Serie A Success
The improvement Stefano Pioli brought to the club resulted in the club’s success in the national league. After having a hard time reaching the top-four spot, they are finally back where they belong.
Stefano Pioli took over the club in 2019 from Gennaro Gattuso. In the first season, his focus was more on reforming the team combining young players with some of the experienced A-listers. Bringing in Zlatan Ibrahimovic and letting the youngsters learn from him has proven to be a great success for the club.
The first season for Milan under Pioli wasn’t as successful. They finished 6th, but have started to show great promise. After the first season, it was all upwards for the Rossoneri. In 2020, they were the runners-up, losing the championship to Inter, but securing a spot in the Champions League.
Finally, in 2021, the Scudetto got into the hands of Il Diavolo. Milan succeeded in achieving their goal and winning the national league.
Back to the Champions League
With great success in the Serie A, came a spot in the Champions League. Before that, the club’s latest participation in the top European competition was in 2013, when they dropped from the group stage.
In 2017 and 2018, and 2020 they took part in the Europa League. In the first year, they reached the Round of 16, where they lost to Arsenal on aggregate 5:1. A year after, in 2018, they didn’t go past the Group Stage. 2020 they saw a repeat of the 2017 season, as they reached the Round of 16 again, only to lose to Manchester United.
Finally, in 2021 they were back where they wanted to be, the Champions League. However, they didn’t have much success, as they finished last in the Group Stage. Nonetheless, we can see that they are slowly adapting, and reaching their full potential in the latest season.
Latest Season
In the 2022 season, Milan have shown excellent progress in European competitions, but at the expense of the national league. Currently, in Serie A, they are in fifth place. However, they still have a few games left to try and reach that much-wanted top-four spot.
Why are they dropping so much in the league? The answer to this question could be the club’s focus on the Champions League. After all, they did reach the semifinals for the first time since 2006. Unfortunately, they lost the Derby della Madonnina against their rivals, Inter Milan.
Despite the loss, reaching the semifinals was a great success for the club. It shows that the Rossoneri can compete at the highest level again, and produce great results. With all the recent success, we can say that AC Milan are finally getting better, and reaching their full potential.
