Best Spaniards to Feature in the Premier League

The Premier League has been graced by some exceptional Spanish talent over the years. These are players who have not only adapted to the English game but have come to define eras for their clubs. From goalkeeping heroics to midfield mastery and clinical finishing, a select few have left a permanent mark. There have actually been a lot of Spanish players playing in the Premier League, but only a few of them have left a lasting, legendary mark on the league.

Today, we want to mention those players and highlight their legacy left in England that some fans are never going to forget.

David De Gea (Manchester United)

Joining Manchester United in 2011, David De Gea initially faced questions over his suitability for the physical nature of English football. His first year at Old Trafford was not as promising as people hoped it would be. He answered those critics decisively, becoming one of the most consistent goalkeepers in the league for a decade.

Over his 415 Premier League appearances, he kept 147 clean sheets. De Gea’s agility and shot-stopping secured numerous points for United. He was a key part of the club’s last title-winning side in the 2012-13 season and won the Premier League’s Golden Glove award on two separate occasions.

Unfortunately, he did not end things on good terms at Manchester and left on a free. He is still an active player and has just finished his first season with Fiorentina at 34 years of age.

Xabi Alonso (Liverpool)

Xabi Alonso arrived at Liverpool in 2004 and quickly established himself as a midfield maestro. His vision and range of passing were central to Liverpool’s style of play under Rafa Benitez. In his five seasons at Anfield, Alonso made 143 league appearances and was instrumental in the club’s 2005 Champions League victory, scoring the equaliser in the final. He also won the FA Cup in 2006.

His ability to control the tempo of a game and his penchant for scoring from his own half made him a firm favourite on the Kop. After his time with the Reds he continued his successful career first with Real Madrid and then at Bayern Munich. He is currently seen as one of the most talented modern football coaches. Alonso has just taken over Real Madrid after an unforgettable stint at Bayer Leverkusen.

Fernando Torres (Liverpool, Chelsea)

Fernando Torres’s impact at Liverpool was immediate and electrifying. After signing in 2007, he scored 65 goals in just 102 league appearances for the club. His pace, power, and clinical finishing terrified defences across the country. In his first season, he became the first Liverpool player to score more than 20 league goes. A feet only achieved by Robbie Fowler before Torres.

While his subsequent move to Chelsea in 2011 didn’t yield the same personal goalscoring return, he did lift the FA Cup and the Champions League during his time in London. With the Blues, he was struck by the Number 9 curse, failing to capture the form that made him popular at Merseyside.

He would end up on loans at AC Milan and Atletico Madrid, and eventually end his career with Los Colchoneros.

Rodri (Manchester City)

Since joining Manchester City in 2019, Rodri has become a vital cog in Pep Guardiola’s winning machine. The defensive midfielder provides the foundation that allows City’s more attacking players to flourish. His reading of the game, tackling, and distribution are first-rate. Rodri has contributed to four Premier League title wins and has developed a reputation for scoring important goals, including the winner in the 2023 Champions League final.

His consistency has made him a fundamental part of City’s domestic dominance. He is so important to City that immediately after he went down with an injury, the Cityzens lost the title the very same year. He should be back and fit for the upcoming season and we should see City back in their full form.

Cesc Fàbregas (Arsenal, Chelsea)

Cesc Fàbregas broke into the Arsenal first team as a teenager and soon became the creative hub of the side and, eventually, club captain. His football intelligence and precise passing set him apart. After a spell at Barcelona, he returned to London with Chelsea in 2014. There, he finally won the Premier League title, a feat he would repeat in 2017. Fàbregas sits second on the all-time Premier League assists chart with 111. It is a testament to his enduring creativity in the final third across his time at both Arsenal and Chelsea.

After his time in London, he played for Monaco and Como, of all places. However, he would soon become the manager of Como, helping them qualify for the Serie A. He is currently one of the most sought-after young managers in the league. And it all attests to his play style when he was an active footballer.
