Once more, Everton did not beat Liverpool. However, the Reds also did not achieve victory, despite the chances. With a score of 2-2, this Mersey derby is one more addition to the draw column of the meetups between the two teams.
First Half
After their defeat at the hands of Aston Villa, the Reds made a few changes to their starting lineup. Thiago and Sadio Mané finally beat the coronavirus and were well enough to play, which, while a factor in the pitch, did not bring the win.
Liverpool started strong. With barely three minutes from the start of the game, they performed a vicious attack and Mané brought the ball home. The Reds had a few more chances, but the aggressive defense by Jordan Pickford eliminated Van Dijk from the match. VAR exonerated Pickford, saving him from the red card. It is a question of whether Van Dijk is going to be up and about in the following matches.
Michael Keane equalized for Everton in the 19th minute. Both teams had plenty of opportunities to gain the upper hand, though Liverpool was better organized. The first half ended badly for them: 1-1 and without their star defender. Both Adrián and Pickford were amazing in their saves. However, we must say that Everton’s goalie was very lucky he did not have to leave the game after the tackle.
Second Half
The second half was very similar to the first. Both teams would make full use of their respective possessions and follow through on their attacks. However, their attacks failed to hit. Andrew Robertson requested and received treatment on the field. For a moment, it looked as though Klopp would have to do without one more injured player. Fortunately, it did not come to this.
Mohamed Salah brought the upper hand back to the Reds in the 72nd minute. A mistake by Yerry Mina gave him the perfect opportunity to strike. That should have been the end of it.
However, Everton refused to back down and they equalized yet again. Dominic Calvert-Lewin, assisted by Digne, struck a header past Adrián.
Once more, VAR was cruel to the Reds. Jordan Henderson’s strike made it to the net, but the goal was disallowed. Mané was caught offside. We could argue that luck was simply not on Liverpool’s side.
